We present to you one of the biggest mountain bike races in the Canary Islands. This exciting competition takes place in the municipality of La Oliva, on the island of Fuerteventura, under the name FUERTEBIKE.

Organized annually by the La Oliva Town Hall and the Columbus Runner Fuer Fuerteventura Club, the Acua Water Park Fuertebike race continues to grow in quality, organization, and number of participants. Year after year, more and more athletes register for what is considered the most important MTB event in the Canary Islands. The race is highly regarded, consistently surpassing 1,000 participants and breaking its own record each year, even doubling the number of registrations in just a few editions.

What is the Fuertebike Race Like?

FUERTEBIKE is the largest mountain bike race held within a single municipality, in this case, La Oliva. Many cyclists are drawn to the event not only for the challenge but also for the stunning landscapes along the route: volcanic terrain, dramatic cliffs, and coastal trails. Highlights include the Las Calderas volcanoes, Majanicho’s coastline, El Cotillo’s beaches, and the cliffs of Tindaya, as well as the interior landscapes of El Roque.

• Half Marathon (45 km)
• Marathon (82 km)

Fuertebike’s elevation gain is not significant. While there are some inclines, most of the race runs along dirt tracks, with occasional sandy or off-road sections. Given that Fuerteventura lacks large mountains, the course remains relatively close to sea level, with minimal altitude gain. However, wind and heat are key challenges, adding an extra level of difficulty for riders.

The entire race takes place in the wild, in the middle of nowhere—literally. The route traverses vast, inhospitable desert landscapes. Competitors navigate using a roadbook provided by the organization, containing all necessary information to successfully complete the race. Additionally, runners are equipped with a GPS tracker, and the course is marked approximately every 50 meters. Should a participant stray off course, the GPS device will alert the organizers, who will promptly guide them back to the correct path. These celebrations take place over an entire week in Morro Jable, usually in August, with most activities centered along the town’s scenic seafront promenade.

With more than twenty editions to date, this cultural event combines recreational and sports activities throughout the day on the promenade, followed by live music concerts on the beach of Morro Jable at night.

What is Youth Week, and how long does it last?

The Youth Week festivities take place in the town of Gran Tarajal during August and last approximately 10 days. It is the summer event par excellence for local young people, organized by a committee of 27 members aged between 15 and 30.

With a history spanning over 44 years in the municipality of Tuineje, Youth Week transforms Gran Tarajal into the epicenter of numerous activities for people of all ages for three weeks.

Political representatives of the event emphasize: “The most important part of this edition is the youth. We listen to their needs and support them throughout these three weeks filled with activities designed for all ages.”

Activities during Youth Week

The event kicks off with the traditional “Subida al Repetidor” race, a nighttime trail run that attracts more participants each year. This race starts at Gran Tarajal Beach and marks the beginning of Youth Week.

Workshops, sports competitions, beach games, informative talks, a costume party, a fun football match between single and married women, and the famous Cholimpiadas (Crazy Olympics) are just some of the activities available. Most events take place on the beach and along the seafront promenade.

Among the many highlights, “Las Cholimpiadas del Mundo” has become one of the most popular events. Other major attractions include the open-water swimming competition, the Pop, Rock & Blues Festival, outdoor cinema screenings, the Special Day celebration, the Miss and Mister Youth Week contest, and a wide range of sports activities such as football, bola canaria, swimming, and races.

Music plays a key role in the festivities. One of the main events is Noche Pop, which has featured bands such as Guineo Colectivo and Sentimiento con Arte in past editions. This concert usually takes place at the end of August.

Also scheduled for late August is the Summer Sound Festival, which has previously hosted artists such as Ariann, Vamos y la liamos, La Sonrisa del Guirre, Los 600, Mejor con Copas, Eme & Withard, and Pedro Cabrera. Who organizes the Gran Tarajal festivities?

As part of Youth Week, the International Work Camp is also organized in August. This initiative welcomes up to 20 young participants from different parts of the world. (La Romería en Honor a Nuestra Señora del Carmen)

When is the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Mount Carmel?

The festivities last throughout the month of July, with the most important day being the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a municipal holiday in the town of Corralejo.

This pilgrimage, held in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, is one of the most eagerly awaited events on the island. Without a doubt, it is the most attended celebration of the Corralejo festivities. The event is deeply rooted in the fishing traditions that define the northern region of Fuerteventura. The Maritime Procession of the Virgin of Mount Carmel draws not only the faithful from the municipality of La Oliva but also visitors from across the island who come to Corralejo to take part in the celebrations.

What is the pilgrimage in Corralejo like?

The day begins in the morning with a religious ceremony scheduled for 12:00 PM. Following the service, the Virgin departs from Corralejo’s church, accompanied by traditional folk music and dancing performed by local folkloric groups. The entire community joins in, walking alongside the procession through the streets of the town.

At around 2:00 PM, the Virgin is taken to the small beach near the Muelle Chico (Little Pier), where she is ceremoniously embarked for the maritime procession. The combined land and sea pilgrimage begins with the “Diana Floreada,” an early morning musical parade performed by folk bands, which fills the streets of Corralejo with festive melodies as the crowd gathers around the Virgin.

The fishermen of Corralejo have a deep devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. More than fifty boats escort the patron saint on her maritime journey through the waters between Corralejo and Lobos Island. One fortunate vessel is chosen to carry the Virgin herself.

Traditional fishing boats from Corralejo bear the Virgin, just as they have for generations, preserving this cherished custom. These same boats also oversee her disembarkation and return to the church, marking the conclusion of the maritime procession.

The Beach Party in Fuerteventura is a free event in which you can enjoy Caleta de Fuste Beach for several days at the end of July.
