With over 40 participating boats and 200 crew members, this tournament attracts fishing enthusiasts from the Canary Islands, mainland Spain, and around the world. Competitors vie for over €7,000 in prizes, gifts, and raffles, in addition to the trophies awarded to the top three winners.
What the Caleta de Fuste Big Game Fishing Tournament Is Like
One of the tournament’s defining features is the great atmosphere and camaraderie among participants. Many competitors return year after year, while newcomers are warmly welcomed by seasoned participants.
More than 200 big game fishermen, mainly from Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, gather in Caleta de Fuste to practice this sport in the most environmentally friendly way possible. The tournament follows a strict tag-and-release system, where each catch is recorded, including species, size, and weight. This data is then used by the judges to determine the winners in each category.
Each tournament day begins at 9:00 AM, when the boats depart from Caleta de Fuste Marina, spending the entire day at sea competing for the best catches. All boats must return to the marina by 5:00 PM.
The coastal waters of Caleta de Fuste in Fuerteventura are highly regarded by big game fishermen due to the wide variety of prized fish species that inhabit these waters. Additionally, this tournament is a well-established event in the Canary Islands’ fishing circuit, known for its high level of professionalism, dedicated participants, and excellent organization. The competition is held in October, a month that offers ideal weather conditions for sport fishing—little wind, calm seas, and perfect temperatures.

Environmental Philosophy of the Big Game Fishing Tournament
The Puerto Castillo Big Game Fishing Tournament is built on a philosophy that emphasizes sportsmanship, environmental responsibility, and competitive spirit. While winners receive prestigious prizes, the tournament’s core principle is tag-and-release, ensuring minimal impact on marine life. This approach fosters an exceptional spirit of camaraderie among participants, many of whom return year after year, strengthening the bonds formed in previous editions.
Each year, more and more people become interested in visiting or participating in this event, making it a highlight of the sport fishing calendar for thousands of enthusiasts. Visitors from the Canary Islands, mainland Spain, and beyond follow the tournament results through media coverage and social networks.
A fundamental aspect of the competition’s philosophy is our commitment to protecting the ocean and marine species. The sport of big game fishing depends on the sustainability of fish populations, making it essential to lead by example. While the competitors aim to tag and release the highest number of fish—especially the largest ones—the tournament also seeks to instill a deep respect and appreciation for the sea and its marine life.
