With over 40 participating boats and 200 crew members, this tournament attracts fishing enthusiasts from the Canary Islands, mainland Spain, and around the world. Competitors vie for over €7,000 in prizes, gifts, and raffles, in addition to the trophies awarded to the top three winners.

What the Caleta de Fuste Big Game Fishing Tournament Is Like

One of the tournament’s defining features is the great atmosphere and camaraderie among participants. Many competitors return year after year, while newcomers are warmly welcomed by seasoned participants.

More than 200 big game fishermen, mainly from Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, gather in Caleta de Fuste to practice this sport in the most environmentally friendly way possible. This data is then used by the judges to determine the winners in each category.

Each tournament day begins at 9:00 AM, when the boats depart from Caleta de Fuste Marina, spending the entire day at sea competing for the best catches. All boats must return to the marina by 5:00 PM.

Swim crossing from Corralejo to Lobos Island
One of the oldest swim crossings in the Canary Islands, a classic event in Fuerteventura for open water swimming enthusiasts. Every year, you can enjoy this gathering of athletes and fans who have made this event a reality and a meeting point for both amateur and professional swimmers.

This event takes place in the stunning natural setting of northern Fuerteventura, in the town of Corralejo, which has transformed from a small fishing village into a top-tier tourist destination in Europe.

From any point on Corralejo’s coast, the small Lobos Island, the main protagonist of this swimming event, can be seen imposing itself on the horizon, delighting participants with its crystal-clear waters and its dreamlike, paradisiacal beaches.

It’s worth noting that the majority of the swimmers taking part in this event come from outside the island. Of the 400 participants in the last edition, almost 75% did not reside in Fuerteventura, which has a very positive impact on the local economy. 3. Popular Swim Crossing to Lobos Island – Fuerteventura Island (1300m)
   This race features a circuit inside Corralejo Bay, opening the door for younger swimmers and enthusiasts wishing to start with open-water swimming.
4. “The Challenge”
   In this race, swimmers will start from the Corralejo Wharf ramp, circle Lobos Islet, and return to complete a 15-kilometer course, one of the longest swims in the Canary Islands. In recent editions, around ten of the most expert and experienced swimmers have participated.

This well-established event, one of the most important in the Canary Islands, has attracted top-level swimmers. In recent editions, we were able to enjoy the participation of a swimming star like Rebeca Santos. This athlete has an impressive record, including being the current world champion in the 800 meters and holding the Spanish record for that distance (9:32). She was also the first woman to win the 18-kilometer race in the Travesía del Mar de Las Calmas and is the current double European champion in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters open-water events. It is certainly an honor to have such a high-caliber athlete involved.

Another well-known figure in the event is Xavi Torres, a classic participant. This remarkable athlete will compete in the 3,400-meter race. Torres has an enviable record, with 16 Paralympic medals, including five golds between 1992 and 2008. He is currently a national coach and a member of Spain’s Olympic team.

Saint Michael the Archangel Festivals in Fuerteventura

This is one of the most important celebrations held in the islands, both for its historical significance and the participation and involvement of the local population. The town of Tuineje celebrates its Saint Michael festivals between late September and early October, in honor of the Battle of Tamasite and El Cuchillete, which took place in 1740. During this battle, the local people, the Majoreros, expelled the British invaders who had landed on some of the beaches of Fuerteventura.

It is traditional for the festivities to begin at the back of the Church of Saint Michael in Tuineje, which provides the perfect setting for a reenactment of what can be expected during the Saint Michael the Archangel celebrations, with numerous performances in different locations within the municipality of Tuineje.

Awards of the Saint Michael the Archangel Festivals
Currently, this festival holds three important awards:

1. The title of National Tourist Interest Festival, as published in the Official State Bulletin (BOE).
2. Cultural Interest and Tourist Interest asset by the Government of the Canary Islands.
3. The honorary title of National Tourist Interest Festival for the Jurada Festivals in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel. This is the first festival on the island to receive such recognition.

What Do These Festivals Celebrate?
These festivals commemorate the historical event that took place in 1740, an event that marked the history of the Majorero society and is faithfully reenacted each year during the festivities.

The history of these festivals recalls two raids by English corsairs who landed on the coasts of Fuerteventura, one in October and another in November of the same year. Due to this attempt to conquer or plunder the island, it led to the two emblematic battles of Tamasite and El Cuchillete. In these battles, the Majoreros of Tuineje defended their territory using rudimentary weapons such as stones and sticks, against the heavily armed English soldiers who were equipped with swords and firearms. The British soldiers, who arrived by sea under the British flag, were defeated and expelled from the island.

The drums and salutes in honor of the fallen are heard every year before the attentive eyes of the locals who gather in the Plaza de Tuineje.

1. Reenactment of the English Landing on Gran Tarajal Beach
   One of the most significant and recent additions to the celebrations, introduced in the last twenty years, is the reenactment of the English landing on Gran Tarajal Beach and their encounter with the locals.

The theatrical representation of the battles, performed by volunteers from the town dressed in the military uniforms of the time, is the most sought-after performance by visitors and tourists. Its magnificent stage production and dramatization attract large crowds to Gran Tarajal Beach.

Without a doubt, an unforgettable scene is witnessing the English landing with all their weaponry and the dramatic events that unfolded as a result of the island’s invasion, with the locals themselves acting as performers, dressed in period costumes.

2. Representation of the Battles of El Cuchillete and Tamasite Mountain
   Another highly anticipated moment of the festival is when the Majoreros face off against the English troops, turning the town of Tuineje and the Llano Florido into the battlefield.

A reenactment of the historic battles of El Cuchillete and Tamasite takes place. The story tells that in 1740, during the Anglo-Spanish War, English corsairs landed in the town of Gran Tarajal to carry out raids (this was the earlier representation at Gran Tarajal Beach). Despite their disadvantage in weaponry and military knowledge, the locals fought back against the troops. The English soldiers were equipped with metal swords and firearms, while the Majoreros had only stones and sticks for defense. Nevertheless, the locals won the two battles and drove the invaders from the island.

The locals involved in the reenactment dress in period clothing and show how the different battles unfolded, a fierce struggle between the Majoreros and the English.

3. Pilgrimage and Offering in Honor of Saint Michael the Archangel
   The grand pilgrimage and offering made to Saint Michael the Archangel on the eve of the main festival is a wonderful occasion for the gathering and meeting of pilgrims. With carts drawn by teams of donkeys, oxen, and camels, they bring all kinds of food to offer to the saint. The religious ceremony and procession the following day provide a brilliant conclusion to the festivals, which have been celebrated for centuries in Tuineje. This ceremony is undoubtedly a favorite among the older generations, although many young people also enjoy the tradition of presenting offerings to Saint Michael the Archangel.

The Canary Islands offer excellent conditions for big game fishing, with waters home to some of the most sought-after species for trolling: the Wahoo, the Dorado, the White Marlin, and the ultimate prize, the Blue Marlin.

It is worth highlighting the commendable behavior of many participants in the Gran Tarajal fishing championship. Regardless of the competition prizes, they chose to release their catches to avoid harming the fish, returning them to the sea as quickly as possible to minimize stress and injury. These species are not in their best condition, and the swift release of White and Blue Marlins demonstrates the strong ethical standards upheld by these anglers. This responsible approach will allow future generations to enjoy the sport while ensuring the tournament’s continued prestige and international recognition.

Activities at the International Big Game Fishing Open

The event kicks off with the arrival of the participating boats. As is tradition, the vessels set out for a day of big game fishing, with different fishing modes scheduled on various days.

The opening evening will feature a dinner and welcome night dedicated to the crews and skippers of the registered boats.

The marquee at the pier is expected to be packed with fans enjoying the activities planned for these four days.

One of the days will be exclusively dedicated to the ‘tag and release’ or ‘release’ of valid species such as White Marlin, Blue Marlin, or the Shortbill Spearfish.

On another day, boats will be allowed to make catches, but they can only bring back video footage for tagging purposes.

On other days, boats will be permitted to bring in catches, but only Wahoos and Dorados will be allowed.

Participants can take photos and videos of their catches to submit to the judges upon their return to the Gran Tarajal marina. This evidence will determine the winners in each category. In case of doubt, a photograph taken with the camera provided by the organizers will be used to validate the catch. The jury will then review the day’s photographs and announce the results.

The competition aims to tag and weigh the catches. Prizes will be awarded for the largest Blue Marlin, the largest White Marlin, the highest total weight of fish caught, the largest Tuna, the largest Wahoo, and the best Dorado.

For reference, during the 2011 competition, 78 participating boats tagged 11 Blue Marlins, 2 White Marlins, and brought in an 83.7 kg Tuna, a Dorado, and a Wahoo over the three days of competition.

Children’s Fishing Championship

The youngest anglers will get to emulate the adults and enjoy their own mini catch-and-release open in designated areas within the Gran Tarajal marina.

Around midday, the traditional children’s fishing championship takes place, open to kids aged 6 to 13. Every year, the number of young participants continues to grow. The event also promotes catch-and-release practices, instilling ethical fishing values from an early age.

Throughout the event, attendees can enjoy a wide range of activities at the marquee set up in the spacious parking lot of the Gran Tarajal marina. There will be entertainment for all ages, including nighttime performances, traditional folk music, concerts, and dances for adults.

How to get to the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Peña

From Puerto del Rosario, the capital of Fuerteventura, take the FV-20 road to the town of Casillas del Ángel. From there, follow the FV-30 road towards Betancuria. About 6 km south of Betancuria, you will reach the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Peña, located in the small village of Vega de Río Palmas—your final destination.

History of the Virgen de la Peña in Fuerteventura

We present to you one of the biggest mountain bike races in the Canary Islands. This exciting competition takes place in the municipality of La Oliva, on the island of Fuerteventura, under the name FUERTEBIKE.

Organized annually by the La Oliva Town Hall and the Columbus Runner Fuer Fuerteventura Club, the Acua Water Park Fuertebike race continues to grow in quality, organization, and number of participants. Year after year, more and more athletes register for what is considered the most important MTB event in the Canary Islands. The race is highly regarded, consistently surpassing 1,000 participants and breaking its own record each year, even doubling the number of registrations in just a few editions.

What is the Fuertebike Race Like?

FUERTEBIKE is the largest mountain bike race held within a single municipality, in this case, La Oliva. Many cyclists are drawn to the event not only for the challenge but also for the stunning landscapes along the route: volcanic terrain, dramatic cliffs, and coastal trails. Highlights include the Las Calderas volcanoes, Majanicho’s coastline, El Cotillo’s beaches, and the cliffs of Tindaya, as well as the interior landscapes of El Roque.

Participants can choose between two race categories:

• Half Marathon (45 km)
• Marathon (82 km)

Fuertebike’s elevation gain is not significant. While there are some inclines, most of the race runs along dirt tracks, with occasional sandy or off-road sections. Given that Fuerteventura lacks large mountains, the course remains relatively close to sea level, with minimal altitude gain. However, wind and heat are key challenges, adding an extra level of difficulty for riders.

A Federated Race Valid for the Official MTB Circuit

FUERTEBIKE is a federated event, making it part of the official mountain bike circuit. As a result, the race attracts some of the best MTB cyclists in the Canary Islands, with a strong presence from riders based in Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote. Over the years, the number of competitors from Tenerife and mainland Spain has also grown, reflecting the event’s growing reputation and high participant satisfaction.

Each edition features renowned cyclists, including world champion and Olympic medalist Marga Fullana. Her participation in FUERTEBIKE is a testament to the event’s increasing prestige within the MTB racing circuit.

Fuerteventura and Mountain Biking (MTB)
